Maggie

Adopted

Update: Maggie was with us from 4-9-22 until 4-15-23.  She passed away from old age at the Ranch and was buried there.  Maggie died peacefully surrounded by her owner and the people who loved her.

4-22-22.  This is Maggie.  She came from Peabody KP with Chewy on 4-9-22.  We were pretty worried about her.  She is very thin.  She was covered in ticks.   She is more withdrawn than Chewy.  She stood in the stall with her face in the corner. 4-11-22 We took her to the Dentist thinking that most of her problem was her teeth. When she had her teeth done and has almost no chewing surface on the bottom.  Her teeth were so bad two of them fell out by hand.  We were suggested to take her hay away so that she would not choke.  Unfortunately, that resulted in her not eating.  We had two choices at that part.  She would not eat the "soup" made for her and she was acting lethargic and depressed so either she would waste away by not eating or we could give her hay back.  She made it into her late 20 early 30's (estimated by dentist) by eating with that mouth and so she obviously knew how to eat carefully.  We can her back her hay and her soup.  She is now eating both.  She does appear to be putting on weight.  She is more engaging with her environment and is nickering at the other horses.  She does not approach the humans yet but she does whatever she is asked.  She had her hooves tended to and they were in good shape.  4-19-22 We took her to the vet.  The vet thinks that she is anemic from malnutrition and that could be what is causing her heart murmur.  We will take her back in 2 months.  She has no respiratory or skin conditions to speak of.  There are a few things on her though.  She has lost so much muscle mass and abdominal fat that where she should have her anus it is a cavity that is very deep.  This means that when she poops it has no where to go and it is just sitting on her skin between her rectum and vaginal canal.  This will lead to infection and skin problems.  Vet said that we may need to do a partial vaginal surgery to sew up the upper 1/3 to keep the stool from leaking in there making her infected and prone to sepsis that could kill her.  We will revisit that in 2 months.  We had her pregnancy checked and she is NOT pregnant.  This is great as neither is likely to survive is she was.  She has had diarrhea and thanks to Chris and her diligent feeding regimen she has now started having solid poops again.  Vet adjusted some supplements such as adding Red Cell.  He thinks that she may do just fine.  Her personality is starting to peek through and she is now showing when she does not like something.
